What is Breast Lift Surgery?
A breast lift, known as mastopexy, raises the breasts and corrects sagging caused by weight loss, pregnancy, loss of the skin’s natural elasticity, or simply the effects of gravity. The procedure serves to enhance breasts by removing excess skin.
A breast lift mastopexy can also reduce areolar size (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), and it can be combined with breast augmentation (mammoplasty) for added breast volume and firmness. A breast lift is appropriate for any size sagging breasts, but results last longest with smaller breasts.
A breast lift is ideal for women whose breasts sag and have lost their youthful shape, contour, or volume. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, maintain a stable weight, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations for a breast lift procedure. The breast lift does not change the breast size, nor does it increase the fullness or roundness in the upper part of the breasts. Women who desire larger, smaller, or more rounded breasts may want to consider a breast augmentation or breast reduction together with a breast lift. Dr. Chaudhari will discuss all procedure details and address any questions or concerns during a pre-surgical consultation.

After surgery, the breasts are wrapped with gauze dressings, and an elastic bandage or surgical bra will be worn. After a few days, this is replaced with a soft support bra worn 24 hours a day for about a month. The breasts normally experience bruising, swelling, and some discomfort following surgery, but these subside within a few days. Stitches can usually be removed after one to two weeks when most patients can return to work.
With realistic goals, you should be very satisfied with the look of your lifted breasts. The results of your mastopexy will be visible immediately after surgery, and you may become even more satisfied as swelling goes down and incision lines fade.
As with any cosmetic surgery, a breast lift has certain risks associated with it, these may include bleeding, infection, temporary numbness, uneven positioning, breast hardening, and tissue damage. Dr. Chaudhari will take special precautions to reduce these risks and ensure patients receive the desired results from their breast lift procedure with minimal side effects.
Mastopexy is usually performed outpatient under general anesthesia and can utilize several different incision options. The most appropriate incision will be determined by several different factors, including the patient’s breast size and shape, degree of sagging, size and position of the nipples, amount of excess skin, skin quality, and more. Some of the most commonly used incisions for breast lift include:
The standard breast lift technique involves a circular incision around the areola, a vertical incision down towards the bottom of the breast, and a horizontal incision along the crease of the breast. Excess skin and tissue are gently removed, and the remaining tissue is tightened. The nipple remains in place during breast relief, allowing patients to breastfeed after surgery.
Considered less invasive than a standard incision, this technique involves creating two circle incisions around the areolas, removing the excess skin, and tightening the surrounding tissue in between for a tighter, rounder breast. Scarring is often less noticeable with this technique, which is ideal for small to medium breasts with moderate drooping.
Dr. Chaudhari will lift and reshape the breast tissue with either type of incision, forming a new, rejuvenated contour. The nipple and areola are moved to a higher location on the breast. Finally, the excess breast skin that results from poor elasticity is trimmed, and stitches are placed deep throughout the breast tissue to support the lifted breasts.

A breast lift typically takes about 2-3 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery and the results you’re looking for. It can also take longer if you are combining a breast lift with another surgery.
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts, enhancing their overall appearance. The process typically involves removing excess skin, repositioning the nipple and areola, and tightening the surrounding tissue.
Recovery time following a breast lift usually spans from one to two weeks for initial healing, with patients advised to limit physical activity during this period. Full recovery and the final settling of the breasts can take several months, during which time strenuous activities should be gradually reintroduced based on your surgeon's guidance.
Ideal candidates for a breast lift are women who are experiencing breast sagging due to aging, weight fluctuations, or childbirth and who wish to restore a more youthful breast contour. Candidates should be in good general health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the surgery.
A breast lift carries risks such as scarring, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, and possible asymmetry in the positioning of the nipples or shape of the breasts. Discussing these potential risks in detail with your surgeon during the consultation process is crucial.
A breast lift can often be combined with other surgeries, such as breast augmentation to add volume or breast reduction to remove excess tissue, for more comprehensive results. Combining procedures can minimize overall recovery time and achieve more dramatic aesthetic enhancements. Combining breast implants to a breast lift is a more challenging procedure, as it involves both removing breast skin and adding volume to the breast. This creates opposing forces that increase tension on the incisions and, therefore, must be carefully balanced.
No. Because you will be asleep during the procedure, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort. You may have some discomfort after your breast lift, but Dr. Chaudhari will prescribe pain medication to ensure you’re comfortable.
A breast lift focuses on reshaping and lifting the breasts. While it may change your breast size slightly, it’s not meant to alter it significantly. If you’re looking to change your breast size, a breast augmentation along with a breast lift may be a better option.
The results of a breast lift are long-lasting, but because of the natural aging process, they are not considered permanent. On average, the results tend to last 10-15 years.
After your breast lift, you’ll want to avoid sleeping on your side or stomach, strenuous exercise, smoking and alcohol, underwear bras, swimming and taking baths, and direct sun exposure. Dr. Chaudhari will give you a detailed list of things to avoid.
Dr. Chaudhari typically recommends waiting 6-12 months after pregnancy before having a breast lift. This allows the body to recover and your breasts to settle before you decide on surgery.
